10 ways to prepare your home for sale

10 ways to prepare your home for sale

Buyers are looking for the best home for the money, so make sure your home is in pristine condition. Use these tips to get your home into shape and wow potential buyers.

Improve your landscaping. Curb appeal is crucial to a good first impression, so make sure your home’s lawn is immaculate. Mow the lawn, trim the bushes, weed the garden and plant colorful flowers.

Clean the outside. A dirty or messy exterior will make buyers think you’ve slacked off on interior maintenance as well. Be sure to clean the gutters and pressure wash your home’s siding. Replace faded house numbers so buyers can easily find your home from the street.

Make repairs. You want your home to be in the best condition possible. Take care of minor and major defects you may be aware of like leaky faucets, broken windows or a leaky roof that could discourage buyers.

Make the front door inviting. A fresh coat of paint will make the front door stand out. If it doesn’t need paint, at least make sure it is clean. If the door knob is old, discolored and peeling, replace it.

Buy a new welcome mat. Let buyers know they’re invited into your home. It also allows them to wipe their shoes before entering your home.

Remove clutter and depersonalize. Buyers want to envision their belongings in your home. Get a head start on packing and put knickknacks, photos, and other personal items in storage boxes and place them in the garage or rent a storage unit. Have a yard sale to get rid of furniture and small appliances you no longer want.

Organize closets and drawers. Messy and over stuffed closets give the appearance that your home doesn’t have enough storage space. Time to get rid of old clothes you haven’t worn in years and a good opportunity to donate to those in need.

Make every surface shine. From ceiling fans to floors and everything in between, clean your home until it sparkles. Make sure the dirty dishes and laundry are put away and make the beds.

Take color down a notch. You might like your color choices, but the buyers may not. Paint your walls a neutral color that will appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Eliminate bad odors. Hide the litter box, empty the ash trays and spray air neutralizer throughout your home. When showing the home, light some candles or plug in some air freshners and fill the home with inviting smells.
